The first rule of acquisition is......

Today the guys brought in their acquisition board games. I think bringing the 2 board
games to the welcome party certainly helped with idea generation. None the less, the range and effort put in was excellent, with 3 games out of 9 now into the final redesign for next week.

I really like '8 legged monsters', it had different setups for different numbers of players.
There was a very colour tangible feel to it along with the fact that it
was a relatively fast game to play

Gang Up has the makings of a great, gang wars, style territory
game. I think the theme of gang turf is an interesting one and while
the casual game mafia is very good, i dont know of too many board games
that are like it. This game needed some random elements like thrown in.
Its also quite a long board

This was a nice an simple yet equally strategic multiplayer version of
GO. each play needed to choose a color and fill their quuadrant with
that colour. The interesting aspect to this game was the potential to
play as the opposite colour in order to fill up the board. I wonder what
this game would belike with 4 colours, each with strengths and weaknesses
along with standard rules for each

The Apartment. Huge scope for this social relationship board game. What themese
rules conflicts can you come up with when sharing an apartment???? This was good.
Maybe the board a little slow and i wouldnt recommend hard coding the random numbers
onto the board but a very interesting one none the less

Medieval had a very broad scope and i think the guys didnt have enough time to play it through.
This is probably the game in this group to build upon for next week.

Excellent idea. A festival acquisition game. You pick a stage and try and make it the biggest.
Again lots of scope for different themes al a certain real time strategy them park games.
Need to think about what to do when there are only 3 players.

Dominion. This has great potential. Very well presented game. Need to really look
at the various aspects of space strategy, exportation, colonisation, conflict.
What game elements could be used to create each of these. You only need to think
of all the RTS style space games to come up with some solid ideas.

"Mark your territory", one game i didnt get to see much of. But again
the grid like system allows for many different ways of playing the game out.

Finaly 'bastardicus'.... i could see eoghans head was once again wrecked
with the implementation of ideas.... It'll come dude...

65 games in 65 mins.......what a way to start a monday morning

At monday 10:10am the guys today had to prepare what has been called in GDC
as the 'microtalks'

20 slides, 16secs a slide MAX

The theme was '5 things about my life that could be a game'

To be honest i didnt know how this would turn out as it was the first time i had used this
idea in a classroom. I had seen it in action at GDC this year and it was the highlight of the
whole show for me in 2010.

I decided to give them this theme rather then keep it open with lets say '5 games'
and im glad i did because it focused their minds really well and the quality
of the output was staggering. It was amazing the different ways people
took the theme both literally and laterally.... fantastic.

The time pressure was a great mechanic as it forced everyone to get to their point
and to the point in a really short time. Conseuqently, people used mainly pictures & graphics
which was the right strategy and one which i hope to encourage again.

My change in tac this year to keep classes more active and less passive i think is working out
well and im going to keep the pressure on. Everybody is responding well.
The trick will be to keep adding enough new thingsto maintain momentum
particularly towards the end of the semester when assignments are due.

Its puzzles on wednesday........should be interesting

how can one gameplay mechanic make an addictive game?

Ok, i dont really like watching or playing golf in the real world, nor do i like playing them virtually either.

But why then am i addicted to the web based golf game....World Golf Tour http://www.wgt.com/?
And why is, what is essentially a 1 button game, so addictive?

Golf games are essentially 1 button games. I just never paid attention to this before. The basic premise
goes something like this...

(1) you create a profile and choose an avatar
(2) you select a course you want to play
(3) you select a type of game (matchplay or closest to the hole)
(4) you are shown an avatar of your golfer standing at the tee, an overlay of the course and the
position of the hole relative to the position of your avatar.
(5) a wind indicator gives you an idea of the strength and direction of the wind.
(6) the game even selects, for you, the club most suited to hit the ball the requisite distance from the player

Its time to play....so how does it work?

> You select the strength on the power meter by dragging the mouse up
> click the left mouse to swing........then wait for the power meter to reach the 'straight line' indicator that will give you the perfect shot at which point
> you left click the mouse.... Click it too early on the ball slices to the left, click it too late and the ball hooks right....

then you wait to see where the ball ends up.......after which you repeat the process....

thats it.... thats all there is to it.......

why then do i feel the compulsion to keep playing? Try it out for yourself and let me know what you think....
